A stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and one of the most debilitating long-term health problems. While the actual cause is unknown, stroke survivors need to know how to recognize the symptoms of a stroke in order to survive the situation. Fortunately, there are several ways to tell if someone is suffering from a stroke, which is the purpose of the acronym BEFAST. Listed below are some tips to help you recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Using the acronym BEFAST, we found 7,685 papers that contained the term "stroke." We removed duplicate records and read the full text for 5,865 of these studies. The remaining 201 articles were considered to be reviews or meta-analyses, so their titles were not related to befast. Furthermore, twelve studies were removed due to incomplete data. In the remaining nine papers, we extracted the data required for their inclusion in the study.

Although BEFAST has a higher specificity than FAST, this tool should not be used alone to diagnose AIS. A prospective study is needed to validate the test and compare it to other screening tools. If both tools are used together, they could increase the detection rate of stroke, reduce the burden on families and society. If the study confirms BEFAST as a useful tool, it should be included in public education programs. This study is currently limited due to lack of funds, but we hope that future studies will be conducted soon to test these tools in real-world settings.
