How to Recognize the Symptoms of a Stroke - Oren Zarif - Befast

Many people do not know the symptoms of a stroke and it can cost them their lives. Knowing how to recognize a stroke and how to respond in time can save lives and prevent long-term disability. To help people recognize the symptoms of a stroke, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute has created an acronym called BEFAST. BEFAST stands for balance, eyesight, and face and is a call to action. Strokes are the third leading cause of death in the United States and are considered one of the most life-threatening long-term health conditions.

To develop the BEFAST algorithm, researchers first determined the risk factors that trigger stroke and the symptoms that can alert doctors to the possible onset of a stroke. They then performed a retrospective analysis of inpatients with AIS whose final diagnosis was stroke. The authors identified patients who could benefit from early reperfusion therapy based on their baseline characteristics. They then used a statistical technique called principal component analysis to determine if the results were consistent across studies.
